Barge Haulers on the Volga

  Barge Haulers on the Volga

For the work Barge Haulers on the Volga, a group of male volunteers was asked to haul a discarded railway wagon with ropes and to re-enact the scene of the barge haulers, loosely based on Ilya Repin’s painting from 1872/73. The appropriation of the scene and the reactivation of the narrative should recall social disparity and its history, as well as the interconnections of poverty and human working power as an economic factor structuring society.
